Fanfiction: "Interns" PG, Gen (tiny bit of Sparky and Lorne/Novak), 1/1
Author: world_of_blade
Title: Interns
Rating: PG
Pairing: Mostly Gen, but has a tiny bit of John/Elizabeth, and a mention of Lorne/Novak.
Summary: The new doctors had come to Atlantis General.
Author's Note: Betaed by the wonderful ubiquitous_girl. Anything you don't like, she probably told me to take out and I didn't listen to her.

“Get her the hell out of here! She’ll mess up the sterile field!”

“It is okay, Doctor Bell, let us move to the hallway.” Teyla Emmagan gently pushed the surgical intern toward the O.R. door while glaring at Rodney McKay. The poor girl was on her neuro rotation, and looked like she was about to vomit.

Teyla helped the green-faced doctor down to the cold floor, and then glanced down the rest of the corridor. Almost all of the rooms had a circulating nurse, sitting down their own young doctor. It was August, and Atlantis General had just gotten a batch of newbies. The fresh out of medical school know-it-alls had come into the hospital, ready to take on the world, and then crashed and burned just like every other intern before them.

“How embarrassing.” Doctor Bell muttered from her prone position on the cold floor.

“After your ears stop ringing, head on over to the doctor’s lounge. I am sure Doctor McKay will not mind if you miss this procedure.” Teyla smiled, and then moved back toward the door as she replaced her mask.

“Done taking care of that sorry excuse of a doctor?” McKay asked the second Teyla stepped back through the door.

“You did not help matters, Rodney.” Teyla was the circulating nurse for Doctor McKay this morning. It meant that she was not scrubbed in, and could come and go from the surgical room to get things for the ones who were.

“Oh, Rodney is it? You call the intern Doctor Bell, but I get Rodney?” Rodney asked, still intent on his surgery. McKay was known for his ability to berate people, and do precision work all at the same time.

You are not a scared intern, who is trying hard to live up to her new title.” Teyla fired back.

“Yeah, Rodney.” Radek Zelenka joined in the conversation, shooting Teyla an amused smile. “Besides, Doctor Carter tells stories about a certain intern who had some problems, himself.”

“That is just Samantha’s way of teasing me. We do, after all, share a close bond that you will never understand, Zelenka.” McKay said, causing everyone in the room to roll their eyes. It was well known that McKay had a thing for Doctor Samantha Carter. She was the only other neurosurgeon that could out-perform Rodney. Carter didn’t practice much at Atlantis General, but she and McKay had done their internship together, so whenever she did come to the hospital, there were always great stories to be heard.

“So she was just teasing when she told the story about how you swore that your TB test was positive because the area was so red, and then had to be reminded by a nurse that the redness didn’t mean anything?”

“Check your read out! I don’t want you overdosing my patient with anesthesia.” McKay snapped, glaring at Radek, as everyone in the room laughed.

“So, how was your intern today?” Elizabeth Weir took a sip of wine as she smiled at John. They had come to a quiet Italian place after work and were basking in the knowledge that they both had people on call for them. Tonight was going to be a date with no interruptions.

“Same as they always are. The snot nosed little brat started out telling me how to improve my surgery technique, and then fainted at the first gusher that we hit.”

Elizabeth laughed, and then tilted her head to one side her eyes sparkling. “I’ve heard a few stories about you being a snot nosed little brat, yourself.”

Giving her a boyish grin, John reached across the table and entwined his fingers with hers. “All exaggerations I assure you.”

“The internal response team says that the baby is fine and they’re driving the van around to the Emergency Room right now.”

“Who in the bloody hell can’t see the big red emergency sign above our door?” Doctor Carson Beckett asked Laura Cadman, the current charge nurse, as they gathered supplies. Only a few minutes ago, the hospital’s com system had called an internal response by the entrance to same day surgery, which happened to be around the corner from the ER. A man had rushed in and told the same day clerk that his wife had just given birth to a baby in the back of their van.

“The guy was distraught, he wasn’t thinking clearly.” Laura said, moving toward the door with the other ER workers.

“You’re telling me.” Carson snorted and then turned to look at his wide-eyed intern. “And you thought you weren’t going to have any fun today!”

Ronon entered the common area that broke off into the Doctors’ lounge, and the lounge for the rest of the OR to find Evan Lorne heating up his dinner. Doctor Lorne was on call tonight, and he always stayed in the Anesthesia sleep room on his call nights. It was rumored that Lindsey Novak, a Life-flight nurse, would sometimes join him in the sleep room, but so far no one had actually seen it happen.

“So how many times did the intern screw up sterile technique in your room?” Evan asked, smiling when he saw Ronon.

“Too many times to count. It’s a good thing we have them practice before the actual patient gets in the room.” Ronon laughed as he pulled out some plastic cutlery from the counter drawers.

“So have you decided where you’re going to go from here?” Lorne sat down on the counter, as he began to eat his microwave dinner.

“I guess I will go to whatever PA school accepts me. Although, I do hope that I can get in at the school here. It would be great to not have to move all my belongings.”

Evan smiled at that remark. “Let me know if you need a reference letter. I’m sure you’ll make a great Physician’s Assistant.”

“Thanks, Doctor Lorne. Sheppard said he would write one up for me too. Even Doctor McKay said he would be willing to write one, but I’m not sure I could trust what he would say.”

“You would do good to take McKay up on his offer.” Evan said, “He is a world renowned surgeon. His signature would make any admitting board sit up and take notice.” Ronon stood shell-shocked, as Lorne continued to heap praise on McKay. No one usually ever had a nice thing to say about the neurosurgeon, especially the Anesthesiologists who had to work with him. “Besides,” Lorne broke into Ronon’s thoughts, “He would have his secretary write it up, and you wouldn’t have to worry about her saying something mean about you.”

Suddenly three loud beeps echoed over the speaker and then a grating female voice came on. “Code Trauma level one. Code trauma level one. Code trauma level one.”

A sigh escaped, as Lorne looked at his half eaten meal. “I guess I won’t get to finish this after all.” Giving Ronon a smile, Lorne threw his tray away and then headed back toward the OR.

Ronon watched as Evan made his weary way back to the Operating Rooms, to get ready for the trauma. A level one meant that the trauma was serious enough to warrant an OR room, and Lorne had to go get everything ready for the anesthesia. Ronon knew that the on call team would probably be up for hours tonight trying to save someone from death. “This is why I am going to be a PA,” he mumbled to the wall, “No more crazy on call hours.” With that, he threw his own snack away and went to prep the trauma room.

Stephen Caldwell walked though the lounge, trying not to smile at all the interns dead on their feet. It was always comical to see the new doctors trying to swim to the edge of the deep end of the pool that they had just been thrown into. At this point, a lot were questioning what on earth they had gotten themselves into. Seeing Doctor Landry in the corner, Stephen went to have a talk with his old friend.

Three loud beeps sounded over the speakers. “Code Blue, East 754. Code Blue, East 754. Code Blue, East 754.”

Even before the speaker shut off, interns were flying toward the door. The same doctors, who were dead on their feet, were now fighting to be the first to the code. The other physicians laughed as feet pounded toward stairs. Interns always wanted to go to the Code Blues.

“Those idiots don’t even realize that a nurse is going to throw them all out on their butts.” One of the doctors mumbled from the back of the room.

“Interns!” Caldwell rolled his eyes, and then chuckled with the others in the room.

And cute John and Elizabeth moment!

Thank you! Yeah, I really like throwing in those random sparky moments. Maybe someday soon I (or someone else who can write better) will have a whole story based on them for the community. Again, thanks for reading. :)

*bounces a little* Yup. Very cute!

Thanks! I seem to have been hit by the "cute and fluffy" bug. I first thought that I would have some hard-hitting stories, and than realized that I didn't want to write any hard-hitting stories just yet. LOL

I love these little glimpses into the daily grind of the hospital! That you actually include everyone is awesome too.

Can I ask you, I actually got the writing bug last night and wrote about five pages of something that can be put in here. Surprising, considering I wasn't even planning on writing for this community. Is it alright? I took some liberties with the backgrounds, so if it is, I'll need you to look over what I have so far and tell me if it's acceptable or not.

Oh, I would love to take a look at what you've written. Hey, even if you have taken some liberties with the background, we can always just put that up in "warnings" saying something like...played around with "offical" backgrounds, or something like that.

Aw, nice! =D Can't have enough Teyla/McKay scenes and I like the snippets into what each is up to.

Thanks! I really like Teyla and McKay together. Now, I am not saying that I like them as a couple (although I do tend to read that ship a lot) it's more that I really like interaction between the two of them.

Great story!

Thank you. I played around with "the real world" a bit in this. Usually the interns are looked after by Residents not the actual Docs, but I figured we can always fudge the lines of "real" in fanfic. :)
